Directional Drilling (Trenchless
"Underground"
Directional
Boring)
Directional boring, commonly called horizontal directional drilling or
HDD, is a method of installing underground pipes and conduits along a
prescribed bore path from the surface, with minimal impact to the
surrounding area. In most cases, a small hole is opened to connect to
the utility and possibly another at the destination or structure, often
with no visible disturbance to the surrounding area in between.
Longer bores may require additional small access holes to increase the
overall length of a bore from the starting point to the destination.
Applications
Boring/Directional Drilling is used for installing telecommunications
& power cable conduits, water lines, sewer lines, gas lines, oil
lines, geothermal, and product pipelines.
It is often the preferred and sometimes required method used for
crossing waterways, roadways, shore approaches, congested areas,
environmentally sensitive areas and any area where other methods are
more intrusive and often much more expensive.
Directional boring is used in place of other techniques for the
following reasons:
# Less traffic disruption
# Lower cost
# Deeper installation possible
# Longer installation possible
# No access pit required
# Faster completion times
# Directional capabilities
# Safer for the environment
Horizontal boring for specialty projects such as geothermal HDPE pipe
installation are not only environmentally non-invasive but may also
qualify for federal and state "Green" tax breaks while also saving
energy and lowering your heating/cooling costs for many many
years. Our drilling rigs are able to bore and install geothermal
pipe in open or closed loop systems where others may require a larger
area for the same pipe lengths due to greater turning capability
(faster/tighter turns).
Concrete or other inaccessible or valuable flooring often creates
problems for remodeling/renovation. Horizontal boring allows
creating new paths from the outside of a building or from points inside
by creating a precise boring path from where a new service is installed
or from where an existing service is located, to a new location.
Rather than opening a path between, it is usually much more cost
effective and faster to bore between and create a single new opening
down to the new path and pulling whatever service is needed up to the
new location.
Whether in an area of tightly packed underground utilities or in remote
areas where it is desirable to not disrupt surface landscaping or
vegetation, horizontal boring is a great solution. No need to
make huge unsightly trenches and remove trees or other obstacles when a
path may be drilled from almost any distance.
Costs
Directional boring has evolved steadily over the past 20 years and is
now the preferred method on many installations due to its low cost and
low impact on surroundings. It is generally less expensive than other
methods such as micro-tunneling, jack & bore and open trenching in
urban areas. In urban areas it can not only save a considerable amount
on installation cost it can provide a tremendous amount of public
goodwill.
We work directly with the home or business owner or may be
recommended/referred or sub-contracted by your service installer.
Feel free to refer us to your service installer. Budget Boring
has working relationships with quite a large number of utility
installation businesses in and around the Portland/Vancouver area.
